No pretty pictures or videos today. I've been trying to learn Blender, and not doing so well. I can create objects and move them around, but I've yet to get UV mapping working, and I can't export meshes (Only really tried to export to MD2, and that failed because there's no UVs).

Blender seems way over-complicated to me, and the online documentation is absolutely rubbish. There's loads of tutorials on Google, but they're all for older versions of Blender. So I keep getting stuff like "Now press the U key to enter the UV editor", and the U key is actually "Undo" in the latest version, so I need to hunt down the UV editor, then find it pretty difficult to use...

Can anyone recommend a simpler 3D model editor? I don't need animation, video editing, sound editing, or any of the other bizzare stuff Blender supports. I just want to be able to create simple meshes (It took me 2 hours to create a house [Well, a cube with a pyramid on top of it], and then I found I'd done it wrong and it had all gone crazy), and paint UVs on it.

Cow_In_The_Well started making some 3D modelling software; Mango, but I gather he gave up with it. I'm sort of half considering writing my own software, but I know I'll just end up giving up after a week or so. Still, that is beginning to look like a reasonable solution; for the features that I need, I don't think it'll be that hard. Still, it would be a massive wheel reinvention...

Yeah, I've used Blender for a Uni project. The interface is a mess and it relies too much on the numpad. Seeing as most students have laptops (and my coursemates especially), this got a little bit irritating shall we say.

I thought Blender was fine for our purposes, but you get what you pay for which is why Blender is total ass compared to things like 3DS Max. I agree that it goes all spazzy without you realising because the axes are all screwed up, and stuff that should take five minutes takes more like fifty. Simple things don't work as documented either.

I can't recommend Blender enough now, after retrying the latest version (I gave up on the older version a few years ago in disgust at the interface!)
My 3dMax/Maya efforts look like kiddy sculptures compared to what I've accomplished in Blender. I dunno - maybe it just suits my head.
Of course you just need to get past the almost vertical learning cliff (not curve) first. It also has some advanced UV stuff that none of the other big-hitters have.
I found these tutorials invaluable:
Blender for the faint-hearted @ Sci-Fi meshes
If you only look at one site, look at the Faint-hearted tutorials - they helped me the most!
