newbie quest....GLUT Error

For starters I'm very new to linux and OpenGL....I compiled http://nehe.gamedev.net/tutorials/lesson01.asp (linux ver.) with apparantly no errors. I ran ./lesson1 through bash and got this: "GLUT: Fatal Error in lesson1: visual with necessary capablities not found." What the hell is this supposed to mean?
